Citadel5, a company registered in England, has two software products to offer: GS-Calc and GS-Base. The fist one, GS-Calc, is a very useful application that you can use to work with spreadsheets. The second one, GS-Base, is an application that you can use to create and manage databases. Both applications can be installed on a desktop machine or on a portable device.

The GS-Base installer is less than 2MB in size, which is not much. On a high-speed internet connection, it will take but a moment to download it. Run the installer and a setup wizard will show up. It will present three options to you: pick the installation folder, choose if you want to create shortcuts, decide if you want to go with the “Portable setup” option.

By default, once the setup wizard is done installing GS-Base on your Windows-powered machine (XP, Vista, 7, and 8 are supported), it will launch the application and load a sample database. All the data included in this sample database is presented on the interface’s main panel. Above it there’s a File Menu and a toolbar. Overall, it is a simple layout and consequently you won’t have any problems figuring out the interface.

From a functionality point of view, you can expect to get the following from GS-Base: use the application on your desktop or put it on a portable storage device; create and manage databases; easily locate information; password protection and encryption; perform cross-table multi-core calculations; send personalized email messages; about 300 standard built-in formulas; up to 100 full-featured pivot tables; and more.

You can use GS-Base for free for a trial period of 30 days. Please note that the trial version is limited: watermark on printed pages, 5 tables per database, exporting is limited to 5,000 lines, 2 long text and files/images in one record, 50 serial emails in one mail-merge pass, nag screen.

Create databases and manage data efficiently with GS-Base.

Pros

The setup wizard presents a “Portable setup” option. There’s a handy sample database that will help you get started with GS-Base. There’s nothing complicated about the application’s interface. GS-Base offers lots of features that come in handy when working with databases.

Cons

Several limitations for the trial version.
